DAY 1: Be specific on your task
It’s the first day of your 5-Day Challenge to Develop an Accurate Time Sense. If you’ve been late all your life, what you learn this week could be life-changing.
Are you ready? Great!
I assume you’ve read the email from me explaining how the Time Sense Tool works. (You can also download the Time Sense Tool and Instructions below.) I said you could choose any activities at all to enter and predict how many minutes they’ll take you to do.
For this to work well though, you should be really specific about exactly what that activity involves. Know in your mind what the beginning and end point looks like.
For example, say you want to predict and track how many minutes it takes you to get to a restaurant to meet a friend. Is your start point when you leave your front door, or as you pull out of your parking space?
Is your end point when you pull up in front of the restaurant, or must you look for parking and then walk back to the restaurant? If your car is parked down the block, that matters!
As another example, if you’re predicting how long something will take to do, don’t lump several steps together. It will be far better information for you to break down a project to the task level.
And think about any possible roadblocks before beginning. A common one is needing to look for information or materials before you can begin. If you need to do this, consider the search a separate activity that you can predict and time.
The more activities you can enter, the faster you’ll be able to see what patterns emerge about your predictions. Keep your eyes open for surprises in what you find.
