Welcome to Day 2 of your 5-Day Challenge to Develop an Accurate Time Sense.
Today's tip is called “Put it in writing: Mental Notes Don't Count!”
Don’t fall into the trap of believing it’s not important to write down your Time Sense findings.
Remember, you should only need to track one or more entries a day to develop your time sense, and it's just for a few days.
It’s tempting to just want to make a “mental note” of how off your time estimates are, but that won’t help you observe your real patterns in a way that will make this stick with you. You’ll need to see the information in writing in order to process it and find various kinds of patterns.
Often people want to use the Time Sense Tool, but they don’t have it with them when they think of making a Time Sense entry. An easy fix for that is to make several copies of the form and have a copy with you in your purse, your briefcase, your car or wherever you’ll need it.
You can also simply record the information you need in the notes of your phone, and add it to the form as soon as possible. You don’t have to do any calculations right at that time… as long as you’ve written down the exact activity, your predicted number of minutes it would take, and the time you started and stopped.
Since doing “time sense” isn’t part of your usual repertoire, don’t hesitate to give yourself reminders to use the tool, and to make predictions or time your activities. For this week, set a recurring reminder in your phone to go off several key times during the day.
Put a sticky note where you’re sure to see it while you’re working, or on your bathroom mirror to time personal grooming activities.
