DAY 3: Find your magic number:  Your Patterns in Column 7

In using the Time Sense Tool, Column 7 is where the moment of truth occurs, because it’s where you write how many TIMES off you were in your prediction, compared to reality.  Ideally, you’ll see somewhat similar numbers coming up across a number of different activities.

If one pattern isn’t obvious, look for some commonalities that would create several patterns.

Some possibilities are:

  • Time of day – perhaps you’re more efficient at certain times of day, which makes your estimates more accurate
  • Type of activity – you might have a different sense of time when you’re traveling to a destination than when you’re engaged in tasks
  • Location – you may be less accurate in estimating when you’re working in a place of many interruptions. Or perhaps your mind wanders more in certain places (your quiet office may be TOO quiet!)
  • Length of task – Perhaps you’re not far off in estimating short tasks such as brushing your teeth, but less accurate for work-related tasks or errands.

Just remember, what counts isn’t how many minutes off you are, but the Column 7 number of how many TIMES off.  An activity that you guess would take 5 minutes, but actually took 15 minutes took you 3 TIMES as long.  Your Column 7 numbetr would be 3.

And something you guessed would take 50 minutes, but really took you 110 minutes was TWICE as long.  The Column 7 number would be 2.   So in that case, you were more inaccurate on the short task than on the long one.

Happy timing!
