DAY 5: Bonus benefit:  Gain efficiencies from what you learn in Column 8

It’s Day 5 of the 5-Day Challenge to Develop a Time Sense.  We talked about the pattern to look for in Column 7 to improve your Time Sense.  But the “Comments” you enter in Column 8 as explanations may show you some valuable patterns as well.   They can point the way to other kinds of solutions you need to be at your best.

For instance, you may not have realized how many kinds of interruptions you experience that throw off your work and your focus.  Perhaps some of them can be controlled.

You might come to realize that you hadn’t been in the habit of breaking down all the little tasks required to do something.  Maybe some of the activities you listed were really mini-projects with multiple tasks as action steps.  To become accurate in predicting time, you should guess how long each action will take.

You may also find that you weren’t able to start right in on your task because you had to waste time looking for information or material.  That happening often points out how much disorganization is contributing to things taking you longer.

Once you become clearly aware of these issues, you know exactly what sort of solution you need to go for next, whether it’s thinking through how to deal with your interruptions, learning how to break down projects, or getting personalized strategies for organizing what you need.

You now have the information you need to gain an accurate time sense.

Just because this challenge was 5 days long doesn’t necessarily mean that YOUR pattern will be apparent in just 5 days.  If your numbers in Column 7 still seem completely random, keep tracking until some patterns emerge.  Or just start multiplying your predictions by one of the higher numbers to see what happens.

What insights are you seeing with your new attention on time?  Time is on your side now that it's starting to make sense!
